It is later, much later, when she picks up the phone.
Her fingers work the rotary randomly. She gets a recording, and hangs up. She thinks of prefixes in her area. She can't see the numbers of the dial, so she counts them out. Phones start ringing all over Montreal. She listens to ringing. Most answer soon enough. Some after ten or eleven, a few after only two or three. She listens to them say hello before cutting the line. Later, she only waits until a connection has been made.
She feels power through her actions. She feels in control.
