Raising the Seas

"The stone you've thrown," she says, "That blue stone, deep down, has raised this water, Carl." She is speaking slowly, pronouncing each word clearly. "All along this bank, and the other side, too, the water has been raised. Just the slightest bit, not enough to see, but your throw has been felt. Here, and far away, all through the oceans, the seas. Throwing a stone, like you have, is felt on every coast all over the world."

She thinks about what she has said.

She stays a long time, listening to the water rush by.
