It's nearly ten by the time I return. She's already dressed, combing her hair in front of the mirror. I hand her an orange and the bracelet. She says, "thanks," and puts the bracelet down on the dresser. She begins to eat the orange. I want to talk but she's not saying anything. When we go she leaves the bracelet where she has set it. She doesn't want to wear what I've given her.
The bracelet will be here when we return.
